Schmidt was suspected of killing Penny, a Hell on Wheels prostitute. Lily asked Elam to take care of the man who killed Penny. Elam approached Schmidt as he relieved himself early one morning. After attempting to proposition Schimdt to kill a prostitute, Elam stabs Schmidt to death. ("Durant, Nebraska")
