Ezra Dutson was a young Mormon boy who is traveling across the prairie with his parents.

Background Information[]

Ezra was the son of Joseph and Eleanor Dutson, both who are Mormon.

Season 3[]

Main article: Season 3

Ezra and his family meet Thor Gundersen on the trail westward, though he gives his name as Andersen. The Swede draws close to the family, especially to Ezra, helping the boy get ready for the day and reading the Book of Mormon to him, though he reads the passages in a rather ominous manner. ("Searchers")

Ezra is baptized by his father along the trail on his eighth birthday, as is Mormon custom. Later, the Swede agrees to be baptized in the river, pretending he has been converted. Instead, he kills both Joseph and Eleanor. Ezra flees the riverbank, though the Swede yells that he will find him. ("One Less Mule") Ezra lives in the wilderness for an unknown period of time until he finds a very ill Bohannon. Though Ezra initially is very frightened of Bohannon, threatening him with a knife, he is ultimately Bohannon and Hell on Wheels' salvation, locating a much needed source of fresh water. Ezra returns to Hell on Wheels with Bohannon and recovers in the infirmary under the hand of Ruth Cole. After his ordeal with the Swede, Ezra has become mute and does not speak to either Ruth or Bohannon. ("Cholera")

Season 4[]

Main article: Season 4

Ezra is still being cared for by Ruth, though he has become quite the trouble maker, going as far as releasing $300 worth of Union Pacific owned horses. Though Ruth toys with the idea of sending him away, Ezra remains in Hell on Wheels. ("Escape from the Garden")

Death[]

After Sydney Snow had set fire to the church which was harboring all of the wanted men, Ezra hid under the floor in the back room of church. The same place that Mickey McGinnes hid when Snow came looking for him with a warrant for his arrest. While Ruth Cole and Cullen Bohannon thought that Ezra had not returned from the church after going to the river, they were mistaken. The morning after the fire had been put out, Ruth, could not find Ezra and she told this to Bohannon. Bohannan thought that Ezra may have been hiding somewhere and not listening to them. Mickey McGinnes then told them that they had not searched the whole church. In ("Return to Hell"), Bohannan went to the back room of the church and lifted the floor and underneath found the late Ezra Dutson.
